Capital Connections: Creating Conversations

Na to rourou, na taku rourou ka ora ai te iwi.

~With your food basket and my food basket, the people will thrive.

The launch event for #WellyED was #educampwelly, which was held at St Mary’s College on Saturday, 28 February. It’s been a little while since we last had an educamp in the capital, and this was reflected in the high turn out – and the impressive distance some delegates travelled to join us! We were proud to host educators from Wanaka, the Hawke’s Bay, New Plymouth, Auckland, Palmerston North, and from ‘over the hill’ in Wairarapa. Oh, and heaps of lovely locals too.

Our main goal for the educamp was to have fewer presentations, instead enabling conversations. At WellyED we aim to support, inspire and collaborate, and wanted the educamp to embody this philosophy. As you can see from these photos taken on the day: mission accomplished!

Topics were diverse, covering the full spectrum from MakerED to Literacy tips and tricks to SOLO Taxonomy (see the Smackdown here). Educamps certainly serve to show that the smartest person in the room is the room, and that together we are greater than the sum of our parts. Fittingly then, the challenge for the day was ‘1+1+1’: send 1 tweet, get 1 idea for use in the classroom on Monday, meet 1 person to connect with. From the tenor of the Twitter feed, delegates met this challenge head on.

Of course, even an unconference requires some organisation, and many thanks must go to the amazing WellyED team. Their names are in the Smackdown too. We’d also like to acknowledge CORE Education for the spiffy lanyards and name tags, Bach Cafe for the coffee, and N4L for the kai. Not only were our food baskets topped up, but we could continue the conversations and connections.

For those of you who joined us, make sure you claim your digital badge (the first educampnz to have one – just sayin’), just like our one right here:

And, importantly, watch this space! We have more #WellyED events planned, including an ignite evening in Term 2. We will continue to learn and grow. Together.

Update 14/3/15

Don’t just take our word for how awesome #educampwelly was! These people thought so too:
